Avocado Hass

• Native to Mexico and Guatemala, the Hass variety was developed in California and thrives in Australia's Mediterranean and subtropical climates.
• Produces small greenish-yellow flowers that are both male and female, though cross-pollination with another avocado variety improves fruit set.
• Can reach 4-8 metres tall with a spreading canopy, making it an excellent shade tree as well as productive fruit producer.
• Beloved by home gardeners for its reliable fruiting, excellent flavour, and the satisfaction of growing your own superfood.

• Water deeply once weekly in summer, reducing to fortnightly in winter when soil feels dry 5cm down.
• Plant in full sun position with 6+ hours direct sunlight and shelter from strong winds.
• Use well-draining soil with added compost and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
• Feed with citrus and fruit tree fertiliser monthly from September to March for optimal growth.
• Prune lightly in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches.
• Mulch heavily around base but keep mulch away from trunk to maintain soil moisture.
• Protect young trees from frost with covers and plant near warm microclimates.

• Provide full sun for at least 6-8 hours daily with protection from strong winds. Morning sun is essential for healthy growth and fruit development.
• Water deeply once or twice weekly during growing season, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter months.
• Maintain humidity around the tree by mulching heavily and grouping with other plants. Avocados prefer 50-60% humidity levels.
• Protect from frost when young using frost cloth or plant near a north-facing wall. Mature trees tolerate light frost.
• Feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and summer, adding compost around the base annually.

• Scale insects can attach to leaves and stems, causing yellowing and sticky honeydew. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap applied fortnightly.
• Root rot from overwatering shows as yellowing leaves and stunted growth. Improve drainage and reduce watering frequency immediately.
• Thrips cause silvery leaf damage and can spread viruses. Use blue sticky traps and neem oil spray during warmer months.
• Phytophthora fungus attacks roots in poorly drained soils. Plant in raised beds or mounded soil with excellent drainage.
