Magnolia Teddy Bear

• Native to southern United States, this compact magnolia cultivar was specifically bred for smaller gardens and urban landscapes. The distinctive brown-felted leaf undersides give it the charming 'Teddy Bear' common name.
• Grows as a dense, upright evergreen tree reaching 4-6 metres tall and 3-4 metres wide at maturity. The glossy foliage provides year-round interest even when not flowering.
• Produces large, fragrant cream-white flowers up to 20cm across that bloom repeatedly from spring through autumn. The flowers are followed by interesting cone-like seed pods.
• Highly valued for its compact size, drought tolerance once established, and ability to flower at a young age.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly during establishment, then weekly in summer and fortnightly in cooler months. Check soil moisture 5cm down before watering.
• Position in morning sun with afternoon shade protection, particularly in hot inland areas. Provide shelter from strong winds.
• Plant in well-draining, humus-rich soil with pH 5.5-6.5 for best results. Add compost and aged manure when planting.
• Apply slow-release native plant fertilizer in early spring and liquid feed monthly during active growth periods.
• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, removing dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning as magnolias heal slowly.
• Maintain consistent soil moisture but never allow waterlogging, especially during winter months.

• Plant in well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter for optimal growth. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
• Provide morning sun with afternoon shade protection, especially in hot Australian climates. Avoid exposed windy positions that can damage the large leaves.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to partially dry between waterings. Increase watering during hot summer months and flowering periods.
• Feed with slow-release fertilizer in early spring and supplement with liquid fertilizer monthly during growing season.

• Scale insects can attach to leaves and stems, causing yellowing and sticky honeydew. Treat with horticultural oil or systemic insecticide during cooler months.
• Leaf spot diseases may occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Ensure adequate spacing and avoid overhead watering.
