Platycerium superbum, commonly known as the Staghorn Fern, is a majestic epiphyte native to the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. It is often confused with its relative, the Elkhorn Fern, but the Staghorn is distinguished by its larger size and the fact that it typically grows as a single, massive plant rather than forming multiple small clumps. It consists of two types of fronds: the broad, green-to-brown nest leaves that anchor the plant to a tree and collect falling organic matter, and the long, pendulous fertile fronds that resemble the antlers of a stag.

As the plant matures, it can become a heavy and dominant feature in a garden, often reaching over a metre in diameter. It does not grow in soil but instead lives on the trunks of trees or on rock faces, absorbing moisture and nutrients through its fronds and the organic matter trapped behind its shield. In a home garden, it is most commonly seen mounted on timber boards or nestled in the forks of large, established trees.

Care Tips

  • Position: Requires a sheltered, shaded position with bright indirect light. It thrives in dappled sunlight but must be protected from the harsh, direct midday sun which will scorch the delicate fronds.

  • Climate: Prefers Warm Temperate, Subtropical, or Tropical environments. It loves humidity and should be protected from frost and drying winds.

  • Watering: During the warmer months, water regularly by misting the fronds and soaking the nest leaves. In winter, reduce watering to prevent rot, but do not let the plant dry out completely for long periods.

  • Feeding: It benefits from having organic matter placed behind the nest leaf. In Australia, many gardeners use a few banana skins or a small handful of compost to provide slow-release nutrients.

  • Support: Ensure the mounting board or tree fork is sturdy, as a mature Staghorn can become extremely heavy when saturated with water.

  • Maintenance: Do not remove the brown, papery nest leaves at the base. These are a vital part of the plant’s structure and its method of storing water and nutrients.

  • Pests: Keep an eye out for scale insects or mealybugs, which can occasionally hide on the underside of the fronds. These can be treated with a gentle eco-oil.
