Platinum Mist is a highly decorative cultivar of the popular Peace Lily, prized for its ethereal and sophisticated foliage. Unlike the traditional deep green varieties, this plant possesses a distinct metallic or “platinum” finish across its leaves, giving it a misty, frosted appearance that brightens up dim corners. The leaves are broad and gracefully arching, creating a lush, full silhouette that works perfectly in modern Australian interiors.
In addition to its spectacular foliage, Platinum Mist produces the iconic Spathiphyllum flower—a creamy white spathe (hooded bract) surrounding a central spadix. These blooms stand tall above the shimmering foliage and can last for several weeks. Beyond its beauty, this plant is well-regarded for its air-purifying qualities, helping to filter common indoor toxins. It is a relatively easy-care plant that “communicates” its needs clearly, making it a favourite for both novice and experienced indoor gardeners.
Care Tips
-
Position: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct Australian sunlight will scorch the delicate silver foliage, while too little light may cause the plant to lose its metallic sheen and fail to bloom.
-
Climate: Prefers warm, humid environments. It is sensitive to cold draughts and frost. In temperate Australia, it should be kept indoors or in a very sheltered, warm patio area during winter.
-
Soil: Requires a rich, well-draining potting mix. A premium indoor plant mix with added perlite or peat moss is ideal to maintain the right balance of moisture and aeration.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. This plant is famous for “fainting” (wilting dramatically) when it is thirsty, but it usually bounces back quickly after a deep soak. Avoid letting it sit in a saucer of water for extended periods.
-
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half-strength every 4 to 6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season.
-
Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks and any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant looking tidy and to encourage new growth.
-
Maintenance: Wipe the large leaves periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust. This keeps the “platinum” shimmer looking its best and allows the plant to breathe and photosynthesise efficiently.
Landscape Use
Spathiphyllum Platinum Mist is primarily used as a premium indoor specimen. It looks magnificent in a sleek, modern Stump pot in a living room or office. It also performs well when mass-planted in a Divider Trough in a sheltered courtyard or a well-lit bathroom, where it can enjoy the natural humidity.
