The Cooper’s Tree Fern is a quintessential part of the Australian landscape, particularly in the moist gullies and rainforests of the east coast. It is often referred to as the Lacy Tree Fern because of its elegantly divided, bright green fronds that can span up to 4 metres in length. Unlike the slower-growing Dicksonia antarctica, this species grows quite rapidly, quickly developing a tall, slender trunk covered in distinctive coin-shaped scars where old fronds have fallen away.

The base of the fronds is covered in soft, straw-coloured scales, which helps distinguish it from other native tree ferns. It provides an immediate tropical or prehistoric feel to a garden, creating a high-level canopy that offers dappled shade to smaller plants below. It is a robust species that, once established, is surprisingly resilient, making it one of the most popular tree ferns for home gardens from Queensland down to Victoria.

Care Tips

  • Position: Best in a sheltered spot with filtered sunlight or part shade. While it can tolerate more sun than many other ferns, it must be protected from harsh, drying winds and the scorching afternoon sun to prevent the fronds from browning.

  • Climate: Thrives in subtropical and temperate climates. It is relatively hardy but requires protection from heavy frost, especially when young. It loves high humidity.

  • Soil: Prefers rich, organic, and well-drained soil. It naturally grows in leaf litter, so incorporating plenty of compost or aged manure is beneficial.

  • Watering: Crucial for success. The trunk is made of aerial roots, so it is essential to water the crown and the trunk, as well as the base, during hot weather. Keep the soil consistently moist but ensure it does not become waterlogged.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or a diluted seaweed extract in spring and summer. Avoid high-strength chemical fertilisers near the sensitive crown.

  • Pruning: Only necessary to remove dead or brown fronds. Cut them off close to the trunk to maintain the clean, “scat-patterned” appearance of the stem.

  • Maintenance: In periods of extreme Australian heat, a daily misting of the trunk and fronds can help the plant survive without stress.
