Orange Washington Navel Dwarf

• Dwarf citrus varieties are grafted onto special rootstock that limits size while maintaining full-sized fruit quality. This allows container growing and easier harvesting.
• Washington Navel oranges are prized for their sweet, seedless flesh and easy-to-peel skin. They're perfect for fresh eating and juicing.
• These trees can produce fruit for decades with proper care, making them excellent long-term investments. Many dwarf citrus live 20-30 years or more.
• The fragrant white blossoms appear in spring and are beloved by bees and beneficial insects. The sweet perfume adds sensory appeal to gardens and patios.

• Water when top 5cm of soil is dry, usually twice weekly in summer and weekly in winter. Deep, infrequent watering promotes strong root development.
• Position in full sun location with morning sun priority and some afternoon protection during extreme heat. At least 6 hours direct sunlight is essential for fruiting.
• Use premium citrus potting mix with excellent drainage or plant in well-draining garden soil. Heavy clay soils require amendment with compost and sand.
• Feed monthly with citrus-specific fertiliser from September to March, reducing to bi-monthly in cooler months. Avoid feeding in winter dormancy period.
• Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape and remove dead wood. Heavy pruning reduces fruit production the following season.
• Protect from strong winds and frost in winter, moving potted plants to sheltered locations during cold snaps.

• Provide full sun for at least 6 hours daily for best fruit production and healthy growth. Morning sun is essential, while some afternoon shade in extreme heat is beneficial.
• Water deeply when top 5cm of soil feels dry, more frequently in summer heat. Reduce watering in winter but never allow complete drying out.
• Feed monthly with citrus fertiliser during growing season from spring to early autumn. Avoid high nitrogen feeds in winter as this promotes soft growth.
• Maintain humidity around potted plants by grouping with other plants or using humidity trays. This is especially important in dry Australian conditions.

• Scale insects appear as small brown bumps on leaves and stems - treat with horticultural oil spray every 7 days until cleared. Check regularly as scale can weaken the plant significantly.
• Citrus leaf miner creates silvery trails in leaves during warmer months - apply eco-oil fortnightly and remove affected leaves. This pest rarely kills but reduces plant vigour.
• Root rot occurs from overwatering or poor drainage - ensure pots have drainage holes and allow soil to dry between waterings. Yellow leaves and musty soil smell indicate this problem.
• Aphids cluster on new growth causing leaf curl - spray off with water or use insecticidal soap weekly. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds for natural control.
