Aloe Vera

• Native to the Arabian Peninsula and widely cultivated across Mediterranean climates, making it perfectly suited to Australian conditions.
• Features thick, fleshy leaves arranged in rosettes with serrated edges and a blue-green colour that intensifies in bright light.
• Grows slowly but steadily, producing offsets or 'pups' around the base that can be separated to create new plants.
• Beloved for its medicinal gel that soothes burns, cuts, and skin irritations, earning it the nickname 'first aid plant'.
• Mature plants develop impressive flower spikes reaching up to one metre tall with tubular orange or red blooms.

• Water deeply once every 2-3 weeks in summer, extending to monthly in winter when growth slows. Check soil moisture by inserting finger 5cm deep.
• Position in bright, indirect light indoors or morning sun with afternoon protection outdoors. Gradually acclimatise to prevent sunburn when moving locations.
• Use cactus and succulent potting mix or add coarse sand and perlite to regular potting mix for excellent drainage.
• Feed with diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during spring and summer growing season. Avoid feeding in autumn and winter dormancy period.
• Remove dead or damaged leaves by cutting cleanly at the base with sterile secateurs. Harvest outer leaves for gel when needed.
• Maintain dry conditions and avoid overhead watering to prevent crown rot and fungal issues.
• Protect from frost and temperatures below 10°C by moving containers indoors or providing winter protection.

• Provide bright, indirect light indoors or morning sun with afternoon shade outdoors. Too much direct sun can scorch leaves, while insufficient light causes stretching.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows significantly.
• Maintain low humidity and ensure excellent air circulation around the plant. Avoid misting or placing near humidifiers as this encourages fungal problems.
• Keep temperatures between 18-24°C for optimal growth, protecting from frost in winter. Can tolerate brief temperature drops but not prolonged cold.
• Reduce watering and feeding during autumn and winter months when the plant enters dormancy.

• Overwatering causes root rot and mushy leaves - reduce watering frequency and ensure excellent drainage. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
• Scale insects and mealybugs may attack leaves - wipe affected areas with rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap. Check plants regularly for early detection.
• Soft, brown leaves indicate fungal issues from poor air circulation or excessive moisture. Move to a brighter, more ventilated location and reduce humidity.
• Sunburn appears as brown or white patches on leaves from sudden exposure to intense sun. Gradually acclimatise plants to stronger light conditions.
