Anthurium Andraeanum (Flamingo Flower)

• Native to Colombian rainforests where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches, naturally adapted to bright, filtered light and high humidity conditions.
• The colourful 'flower' is actually a modified leaf called a spathe, while the true flowers are tiny bumps on the central spike called a spadix.
• Grows slowly to 40-60cm tall and wide, forming a compact clump of glossy, heart-shaped leaves that provide year-round tropical foliage appeal.
• Beloved for producing long-lasting blooms that can persist for 2-3 months each, with mature plants producing multiple flowers throughout the year indoors.
• Air-purifying qualities help remove formaldehyde and ammonia from indoor air, making it both beautiful and beneficial for home environments.

• Water when top inch of soil feels dry, typically every 5-7 days in summer and every 10-14 days in winter. Always check soil moisture rather than following a rigid schedule.
• Position in bright, indirect light away from direct sun which burns the leaves. An east-facing window or filtered south-facing location works perfectly.
• Use well-draining potting mix combined with orchid bark or perlite to prevent waterlogging. Ensure pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot.
• Feed with diluted liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer growing season. Reduce to every 8 weeks in autumn and skip winter feeding entirely.
• Remove spent flowers by cutting stems back to base and trim any yellowing or damaged leaves with clean secateurs. Wipe leaves monthly with damp cloth.
• Maintain humidity above 50% using pebble trays or grouping with other plants. Run a humidifier during dry winter months or air conditioning season.
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring using fresh, well-draining mix. Choose pots only slightly larger than current size as Anthuriums prefer being slightly pot-bound.

• Provide bright, indirect light near an east or north-facing window - avoid direct sunlight which scorches the leaves. Fluorescent lighting works well for darker indoor spaces.
• Water when top inch of soil feels dry, maintaining consistent moisture without waterlogging. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows naturally.
• Maintain humidity levels of 60-80% using humidity trays, grouping plants together, or running a humidifier nearby. Mist around the plant, not directly on leaves.
• Keep temperatures between 18-27°C year-round, protecting from cold drafts and air conditioning vents. Night temperatures can drop slightly but never below 15°C.
• Feed monthly with diluted liquid fertiliser during growing season from spring to early autumn. Skip feeding in winter when plant growth naturally slows.

• Aphids and spider mites attack new growth - spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil weekly until cleared. Check undersides of leaves regularly for early detection.
• Root rot from overwatering causes yellowing leaves and mushy stems - reduce watering and ensure excellent drainage. Repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix if severely affected.
• Brown leaf tips indicate low humidity or fluoride in tap water - increase humidity with pebble trays and use filtered or rainwater. Trim brown tips with clean scissors.
• Bacterial blight causes water-soaked spots on leaves - remove affected foliage immediately and improve air circulation. Avoid overhead watering and water at soil level only.
