Epiphyllum Oxypetalum

• Originally from the rainforests of Central and South America, this epiphytic cactus grows naturally on tree branches. It's adapted to filtered light and higher humidity than desert cacti.
• The flattened, leaf-like stems are actually modified branches that photosynthesize and store water. These segmented stems can cascade beautifully from hanging containers.
• Famous for its spectacular night-blooming habit, each flower opens once at sunset and closes by dawn. The blooms are intensely fragrant and can reach 25cm across.
• Plant enthusiasts treasure this species for its dramatic flowering display and unique growth habit. Many growers host 'blooming parties' to witness the rare flowering event.

• Water when top 2-3cm of soil feels dry, usually weekly in growing season and less frequently in winter. Empty saucers after watering to prevent waterlogging.
• Position in bright, filtered light such as near a sheer curtain or east-facing window. Morning sun is beneficial but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
• Use a well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix with added orchid bark or perlite. Good drainage is essential for healthy root development.
• Feed monthly with diluted liquid fertiliser during spring and summer growing season. Reduce to quarterly feeding in autumn and stop in winter.
• Prune only to remove damaged stems or control size, cutting at natural segments. Pruned sections can be propagated as new plants.
• Maintain moderate humidity by grouping with other plants or using pebble trays. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
• Move outdoors to a sheltered spot in warmer months, gradually acclimatising to prevent shock.

• Provide bright, indirect light near an east or north-facing window. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch the flattened stems.
• Water thoroughly when top inch of soil feels dry, typically weekly in summer and fortnightly in winter. Allow excess water to drain completely from the pot.
• Maintain humidity around 40-60% by grouping with other plants or using a humidity tray. Mist the air around the plant, not the stems directly.
• Keep temperatures between 18-24°C year-round with cooler nights in autumn to encourage blooming. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
• Reduce watering and feeding in winter when growth slows, resuming normal care in spring.

• Scale insects can attach to stems - wipe with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Check regularly for small brown bumps on the flattened stems.
• Root rot occurs from overwatering - ensure excellent drainage and allow soil to dry between waterings. Yellow or mushy stems indicate water stress.
• Aphids may cluster on new growth - spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Rinse leaves regularly to prevent infestations.
• Fungal issues develop in humid conditions - improve air circulation and avoid water on foliage. Remove any affected plant material immediately.
