Acacia Longifolia

• Native to southeastern Australia, naturally growing in coastal heathlands, woodlands and forest margins.
• Fast-growing evergreen that can reach 8 metres tall with a spreading canopy and distinctive long, narrow phyllodes instead of true leaves.
• Beloved for its profuse golden-yellow flower displays in late winter to spring that fill gardens with sweet fragrance.
• Excellent pioneer species that improves soil fertility through nitrogen fixation while providing habitat for native wildlife.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly during establishment, then monthly once mature except during drought periods.
• Position in full sun locations for maximum flowering, though tolerates light afternoon shade in hot inland areas.
• Plant in sandy, loamy or clay soils with good drainage, avoiding waterlogged or heavy clay areas.
• Feed with native plant fertiliser twice yearly in spring and autumn, avoiding high-phosphorus products.
• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove spent flower heads to encourage repeat blooming.
• Mulch around base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from trunk.

• Provide full sun exposure for best flowering and growth, though it tolerates partial shade in hot climates.
• Water deeply but infrequently once established, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Young plants need regular moisture.
• Plant in well-draining soil as waterlogged conditions cause root problems. Sandy or loamy soils work best.
• Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.
• Apply native plant fertiliser sparingly as acacias prefer low-phosphorus conditions.

• Scale insects can attach to stems and leaves, causing yellowing and weakening. Treat with horticultural oil or remove manually with a soft brush.
• Root rot occurs in poorly draining soils or with overwatering. Ensure excellent drainage and reduce watering frequency.
• Borers may tunnel into branches, causing dieback. Prune affected areas immediately and dispose of infected material.
• Wattle aphids can cluster on new growth, causing leaf distortion. Spray with insecticidal soap or encourage beneficial insects.
