Adenium Obesum Pink (Desert Rose)

• Native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the Desert Rose has adapted to thrive in harsh, arid conditions. Its swollen trunk stores water for drought periods.
• The thick, succulent stem called a caudex is highly prized and develops character with age. Mature plants can live for decades and become more beautiful over time.
• Pink trumpet-shaped flowers appear in clusters from spring through autumn in warm climates. Each bloom can last several days and attracts butterflies and other pollinators.
• Popular with bonsai enthusiasts and succulent collectors for its sculptural form. The plant's unique appearance makes it a conversation starter in any collection.

• Water deeply but infrequently during the growing season, ensuring the soil dries out completely between waterings. In winter, water only once a month or less to prevent root rot.
• Position in the brightest spot available with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A north-facing position is ideal in southern Australian states.
• Use a specialised cactus and succulent potting mix or create your own by adding extra perlite and coarse sand. Drainage is absolutely critical for healthy growth.
• Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength monthly from September through March. Switch to a bloom-boosting fertiliser high in phosphorus to encourage flowering.
• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches and wear gloves as the sap is toxic.
• The Desert Rose prefers low humidity and excellent air circulation. Avoid placing near humidifiers or in bathrooms with poor ventilation.
• Bring potted plants indoors or under cover before the first frost in cooler regions. They can tolerate brief periods down to 10°C but prefer warmer temperatures year-round.
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger pot. The Desert Rose actually flowers better when slightly root-bound, so don't oversize the container.

• Place in full sun for at least 6 hours daily to encourage prolific flowering. The more sun, the better the blooms and compact growth habit.
• Water sparingly during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between drinks. Reduce watering drastically in winter when the plant is dormant.
• Provide excellent drainage using a cactus and succulent potting mix. Add extra perlite or coarse sand to regular potting mix if needed.
• Protect from frost and temperatures below 10°C as the Desert Rose is frost-tender. Bring potted plants indoors or under cover during cold snaps.
• Feed monthly during spring and summer with a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertiliser to promote flowering. Avoid feeding in autumn and winter.

• Overwatering is the most common issue, causing root rot and yellowing leaves. Ensure soil dries out completely between waterings and use a very well-draining mix.
• Scale insects and mealybugs can appear on leaves and stems. Treat with horticultural oil or remove manually with rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud.
• Leaf spot and fungal diseases occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Improve ventilation and avoid wetting foliage when watering.
• Spider mites may attack during hot, dry periods. Spray with water or use insecticidal soap if infestation is severe.
