Agave Lophantha 'Splendida'

• Agave Splendida forms a stunning symmetrical rosette of thick, fleshy leaves with elegant form and presence. The architectural structure makes it a designer favourite for modern landscapes.
• Native to arid regions, this agave is supremely drought-tolerant once established. It stores water in its thick leaves, making it ideal for water-restricted gardens.
• The plant matures slowly over many years, eventually producing a spectacular flowering spike. After flowering, the main rosette dies but often produces offsets to continue the colony.
• Gardeners love Agave Splendida for its zero-fuss nature and striking year-round appearance. It never needs deadheading, rarely needs water, and always looks spectacular.

• Water only when soil is completely dry, typically every 2-4 weeks in summer and monthly or less in winter. Always check soil moisture before watering.
• Position in full sun locations with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Morning sun with afternoon protection works well in extreme heat areas.
• Use a fast-draining succulent mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand for optimal drainage. Standard potting mix will retain too much moisture.
• Feed with diluted low-nitrogen succulent fertiliser only during spring and summer growing season. Avoid fertilising in autumn and winter when plant is dormant.
• Remove dead lower leaves as they naturally dry and drop to keep the plant tidy. Wear thick gloves as leaf margins can be sharp.
• Ensure excellent air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues in humid conditions. Avoid crowding with other plants.
• In frost-prone areas, provide winter protection with frost cloth or plant in sheltered positions. Established plants tolerate light frosts but not prolonged freezing.

• Provide full sun exposure for at least 6 hours daily to maintain compact growth and vibrant colour. Agave Splendida tolerates intense Australian heat without damage.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering to minimal levels during winter months.
• Plant in extremely well-draining soil with added pumice, coarse sand, or gravel. Poor drainage is the fastest way to kill this agave.
• Fertilise sparingly with a low-nitrogen succulent fertiliser once in spring and once in summer. Excessive feeding causes weak, floppy growth.
• Protect from extended frosts in cooler regions by planting under eaves or providing temporary frost cloth coverage during cold snaps.

• Overwatering is the most common problem, causing root rot and leaf discolouration. Ensure soil dries completely between waterings and improve drainage with gritty soil mix.
• Agave snout weevil can attack the plant's core, causing collapse. Inspect regularly for black beetles and remove affected tissue immediately.
• Scale insects and mealybugs may appear on leaves as white cottony masses or brown bumps. Treat with horticultural oil or wipe off manually with methylated spirits.
• Fungal infections can occur in humid conditions or with poor air circulation. Remove affected leaves and avoid overhead watering to prevent spread.
