Agave Tequilana

• Native to the volcanic soils of Jalisco, Mexico, where it has been cultivated for centuries for tequila production. This iconic succulent has adapted superbly to similar Australian climates.
• Features magnificent rosettes of thick, fleshy blue-grey leaves with sharp terminal spines. The powdery bloom on the leaves intensifies the stunning silvery-blue colour.
• Grows as a solitary rosette that can take 7-10 years to reach maturity. The plant flowers once in its lifetime, sending up a spectacular tall flower spike before dying.

• Prune only to remove dead or damaged lower leaves using clean, sharp secateurs. Wear thick gloves and eye protection when handling due to sharp leaf tips.
• Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid coastal areas. Space plants appropriately and avoid crowding.
• Protect from heavy frosts when young by covering with frost cloth or moving potted plants to sheltered locations. Mature plants tolerate light frosts to around -5°C.
• Monitor for pests during warmer months and maintain dry conditions around the crown to prevent rot.

• Plant in full sun for best colour and compact growth. Agave Tequilana tolerates light shade but may stretch and lose its attractive blue colouration.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Established plants are highly drought-tolerant and require minimal supplemental water.
• Use extremely well-draining soil such as cactus mix or sandy loam. Heavy clay soils will cause root rot and must be amended or avoided.
• Fertilise sparingly once or twice during the growing season with a low-nitrogen succulent fertiliser. Too much feeding produces soft, unattractive growth.
• Provide frost protection when young, though mature plants tolerate light frosts. Move potted specimens under cover during cold snaps.
• Remove dead lower leaves as needed to maintain appearance and prevent pest harbourage.

• Overwatering is the most common issue, causing root rot and yellowing leaves. Ensure soil is completely dry between waterings and provide excellent drainage.
• Agave snout weevil can bore into the plant's heart, causing collapse. Inspect regularly for entry holes and remove affected plants immediately to prevent spread.
• Fungal diseases may occur in humid conditions or with poor air circulation. Provide plenty of space around the plant and avoid overhead watering.
• Mealybugs and scale insects occasionally infest leaf bases. Remove with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or apply horticultural oil.
