Alloxylon Flammeum

• Native to Queensland and northern New South Wales rainforest margins and wet sclerophyll forests. Naturally grows along creek lines and forest edges.
• Produces spectacular clusters of orange-red tubular flowers that attract honeyeaters, lorikeets and other native birds. Flowers typically appear in late spring to early summer.
• Can reach 15-20 metres in ideal conditions with a spreading canopy. Develops attractive compound leaves and smooth grey bark.
• Highly valued by landscapers for its dramatic flowering display and excellent shade provision in larger gardens.

• Water young trees twice weekly, established trees monthly during dry periods. Check soil moisture 5cm deep before watering.
• Position in full sun to partial shade with protection from strong winds. Morning sun with afternoon shade ideal in hot climates.
• Plant in well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter. Avoid clay soils and waterlogged areas.
• Feed with native plant fertiliser in spring and autumn. Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilisers that can damage Australian natives.
• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove dead wood. Avoid heavy pruning which can reduce flowering.
• Mulch around base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from trunk base.

• Provide full sun to partial shade for best flowering and growth performance. Morning sun with afternoon protection works well in hot climates.
• Water deeply but infrequently once established, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Young trees need regular watering for first two years.
• Plant in well-draining soil with good organic content. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged positions.
• Apply native plant fertiliser in spring and autumn. Avoid high phosphorus fertilisers which can damage native plants.

• Scale insects can attach to leaves and stems, causing yellowing and weak growth. Treat with horticultural oil or systemic insecticide.
• Root rot may occur in poorly draining soils, especially during wet periods. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering.
• Leaf spot fungal diseases can develop in humid conditions. Improve air circulation and apply copper-based fungicide if severe.
• Borers may attack stressed trees, creating holes in bark and branches. Keep trees healthy with proper watering and fertilising.
