• Native to South America, bougainvilleas were introduced to Australia in the 1800s and have become iconic garden plants.
• The colourful 'flowers' are actually modified leaves called bracts - the true flowers are small and white in the centre.
• Gloucester Royal is known for its particularly rich purple-red bract colour that intensifies in cooler weather.
• This vigorous climber can reach 4-6 metres if left unpruned, making it excellent for covering large structures.
• Drought tolerance once established makes it perfect for water-wise Australian gardens.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly in summer, reducing to monthly in winter. Check soil moisture before watering to prevent overwatering.
