Cactus Assorted

• Cacti are native to the Americas, from Canada to South America, adapted to survive in harsh desert conditions with minimal rainfall. They've evolved unique water storage capabilities in their thick stems.
• These rare varieties showcase incredible diversity in forms, from columnar to spherical, with some producing stunning flowers in vibrant colours. Each species has developed unique survival strategies over millions of years.
• Their modified leaves (spines) reduce water loss and protect against herbivores, while their waxy coating prevents moisture evaporation. Some species can live over 100 years with proper care.
• Collectors love cacti for their architectural beauty, low maintenance requirements, and fascinating growth patterns that change dramatically over time.

• Water thoroughly but infrequently during growing season (spring-autumn), allowing soil to completely dry between waterings. In winter, water monthly or less depending on temperature and humidity.
• Provide maximum sunlight possible - at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for healthy growth and flowering. Rotate pots regularly for even growth.
• Use well-draining cactus potting mix or create your own with regular potting mix, coarse sand, and perlite. Ensure pots have drainage holes.
• Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertiliser or quarter-strength liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
• Prune only to remove damaged or diseased parts using clean, sharp tools. Wear thick gloves to protect from spines.
• Maintain low humidity and good air circulation to prevent fungal problems, especially important in humid Australian climates.
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring using fresh, well-draining soil and slightly larger containers.

• Provide bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours daily - place near south-facing windows indoors or in full sun outdoors. Insufficient light causes elongated, weak growth.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering to monthly or less during winter months.
• Maintain low humidity and ensure excellent air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Avoid humid bathrooms or poorly ventilated areas.
• Keep temperatures between 15-30°C for optimal growth, protecting from frost in winter. Most species can tolerate brief cold snaps but not prolonged freezing.
• Reduce or stop fertilising in autumn and winter when growth slows, resuming light feeding in spring.

• Overwatering causes root rot and soft, yellowing stems - water only when soil is completely dry and ensure excellent drainage. Allow soil to dry between waterings, especially in winter.
• Scale insects and mealybugs hide in crevices and joints, appearing as white cottony masses or brown bumps. Dab with rubbing alcohol or use insecticidal soap spray.
• Fungal infections develop in humid conditions, showing as black or brown soft spots. Improve air circulation and reduce watering frequency.
• Sunburn creates yellow or white patches on stems when moved too quickly to intense light. Gradually acclimatise plants to brighter positions over several weeks.
