Cleistocactus Strausii (Silver Torch)

• Native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Argentina, this cactus is adapted to bright light and cool nights. It thrives in similar conditions found in many Australian regions.
• The distinctive silvery-white spines densely cover the columnar stems, creating a soft, fuzzy appearance that's unique among cacti. Mature plants may produce tubular red flowers along the stems.
• Grows in an upright, columnar habit with multiple stems branching from the base over time. Creates an impressive vertical statement in the garden or large containers.
• Beloved for its low-maintenance nature, drought tolerance, and striking architectural form. The silver colouration adds a unique cooling element to hot, sunny gardens.

• Water deeply but infrequently during warmer months, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to minimal watering or stop entirely if kept cool.
• Position in full sun for at least 6 hours daily to maintain compact growth and vibrant silver colouration. Can tolerate bright indirect light indoors but may stretch slightly.
• Use specialist cactus and succulent mix with excellent drainage, or create your own with 50% regular potting mix and 50% coarse sand and perlite. Never use moisture-retaining soils.
• Feed with half-strength liquid cactus fertiliser monthly during spring and summer growing season. Cease all feeding during autumn and winter to allow natural dormancy.
• No pruning required except to remove damaged or diseased stems at the base. Wear thick gloves when handling due to sharp spines.
• Thrives in low humidity environments typical of Australian homes and gardens. Avoid placing near bathrooms or in overly humid positions.
• Protect from frost and move indoors or under cover if temperatures drop below 5°C during winter. Excellent for Australian climates with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

• Provide full sun to part shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best silver colouration and compact growth. In extremely hot Australian summers, afternoon shade prevents scorching.
• Water sparingly during growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering to once monthly or less during winter dormancy.
• Plant in very well-draining cactus mix or add extra perlite and coarse sand to regular potting mix. Poor drainage is the quickest way to lose this cactus.
• Tolerates high temperatures and dry conditions exceptionally well, making it ideal for Australian climates. Protect from frost and temperatures below 5°C.
• Feed with diluted cactus fertiliser monthly during spring and summer only. No feeding required during autumn and winter dormancy.

• Overwatering is the most common issue, causing root rot and soft, yellowing stems. Ensure soil dries completely between waterings and use extremely well-draining cactus mix.
• Mealybugs and scale insects can hide between spines, appearing as white cottony masses or brown bumps. Treat with horticultural oil or isopropyl alcohol applied with a cotton swab.
• Fungal infections may occur in humid conditions, causing brown or black spots on stems. Improve air circulation and reduce watering frequency immediately.
• Etiolation or stretching occurs in low light, causing pale, thin growth. Move to a brighter position with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
