Fraxinus Griffithii

• Native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Himalayan regions, where it grows as a medium to large evergreen tree. Also known as Himalayan Ash or Evergreen Ash in some regions.
• Features glossy compound leaves with 5-9 leaflets and produces fragrant cream-white flower clusters in spring. The attractive winged seeds that follow add ornamental interest through summer and autumn.
• Grows to 8-15 metres tall with a spreading canopy, making it excellent for shade and screening. Its evergreen nature provides year-round structure unlike most ash species.
• Valued by gardeners for its adaptability to various soil types and urban conditions. The fragrant flowers attract beneficial insects while the dense foliage provides habitat for birds.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly during establishment, then reduce to fortnightly or monthly for mature trees. Check soil moisture at 10cm depth before watering. Increase frequency during hot, dry spells.
• Position in full sun to partial shade with morning sun preferred. Protect from strong afternoon sun in extremely hot climates. Ensure adequate space for mature canopy spread.
• Plant in well-draining soil enriched with compost and organic matter. Add coarse sand to heavy clay soils for better drainage. Maintain pH between 6.0-7.5 for optimal growth.
• Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer. Use a balanced NPK fertiliser or specific tree fertiliser. Supplement with compost annually around the drip line.
• Prune lightly in late winter to shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning which can stimulate excessive growth. Remove suckers from the base regularly.
• Prefers moderate humidity but adapts to various conditions once established. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Protect young trees from frost and strong winds.

• Provide full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and flowering. Morning sun with afternoon protection works well in hot Australian climates. Avoid deep shade which reduces flowering.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Established trees are quite drought tolerant but benefit from regular water during extended dry periods.
• Plant in well-draining soil with good organic content. Clay soils should be amended with compost and sand. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Protect young trees from strong winds and frost. Once established, they tolerate urban pollution and coastal conditions well. Regular feeding promotes healthy growth.

• Aphids can cluster on new growth causing leaf distortion. Spray with horticultural oil or encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds. Regular monitoring helps catch infestations early.
• Scale insects may attach to branches and leaves, appearing as small brown bumps. Remove manually or treat with white oil spray during cooler months. Ensure good air circulation around the tree.
• Root rot can occur in poorly draining soils or with overwatering. Improve drainage and reduce watering frequency. Consider raised planting beds in heavy clay soils.
• Leaf spot diseases may develop in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Prune to improve airflow and avoid overhead watering. Remove affected leaves promptly.
