Gazania Gold

• Native to South Africa, Gazania Gold belongs to the daisy family and is perfectly adapted to Mediterranean and arid climates. It has naturalised beautifully across Australia's coastal regions.
• The flowers track the sun throughout the day, opening fully in bright light and closing in cloudy weather or at dusk. This behaviour is called heliotropism and makes the plant fascinating to observe.
• Forms dense, spreading mats of silvery-green foliage topped with brilliant golden flowers on sturdy stems. The contrast between foliage and blooms creates exceptional garden impact.
• Beloved by gardeners for its extreme drought tolerance, low maintenance requirements, and months of continuous colour. Also attracts beneficial insects and butterflies to the garden.

• Water weekly during establishment, then reduce to fortnightly or monthly once established - always check soil is dry before watering. Increase frequency during extreme heat.
• Position in full sun locations with morning sun essential for flower opening - avoid shaded or partly shaded spots. Protect from strong afternoon sun in hottest regions.
• Plant in sandy, well-draining soil with pH 6.0-7.5 - add compost and coarse sand to heavy clay soils. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
• Apply balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during growing season from spring to autumn. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which promote foliage over flowers.
• Deadhead spent blooms weekly and trim back leggy growth in late winter before new growth begins. Remove damaged or yellowing foliage promptly.
• Mulch lightly around plants but keep mulch away from stems to prevent collar rot and pest harbouring.

• Plant in full sun locations for best flowering performance - Gazania Gold needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Flowers will remain closed in shaded areas.
• Water deeply but infrequently once established, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter months when growth slows.
• Provide well-draining soil and avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. Add coarse sand or gravel to improve drainage if necessary.
• Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season. Cut back by one-third in late winter to promote fresh growth.
• Apply light fertiliser in early spring but avoid over-feeding which can reduce flowering and increase leaf growth.

• Aphids can cluster on new growth - spray with insecticidal soap or encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds. Remove affected shoots if infestation is severe.
• Root rot occurs in poorly draining soils - ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Plant in raised beds or add coarse sand to heavy clay soils.
• Snails and slugs may damage young foliage - apply organic pellets or create beer traps around plants. Hand-pick pests during evening inspections.
• Fungal diseases can develop in humid conditions - provide good air circulation and water at soil level rather than overhead. Remove any affected leaves promptly.
