King Kelp

• Native to coastal regions where it evolved its distinctive kelp-like appearance to withstand salt-laden winds and moisture fluctuations
• Features long, ribbon-like leaves that arch gracefully from the crown, creating a fountain-like growth habit up to 80cm tall
• Highly valued by interior designers for its architectural form and ability to soften harsh lines in contemporary spaces
• Produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by ornamental seed pods that add seasonal interest to the display
• Belongs to an ancient plant family that has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years

• Water thoroughly when top 2-3cm of soil is dry, approximately every 7-10 days in summer and every 14 days in winter
• Position in bright indirect light near an east or north-facing window, avoiding harsh afternoon sun that damages foliage
• Use premium potting mix with added perlite or orchid bark for excellent drainage and root health
• Apply liquid fertiliser monthly from September to March, reducing to every 3 months during cooler months
• Trim dead or damaged fronds at the base using clean secateurs to maintain plant health and appearance
• Maintain humidity by misting around the plant or using a pebble tray, especially during dry Australian winters
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger pot to accommodate the expanding root system

• Provide bright indirect light indoors or dappled shade outdoors - avoid direct sunlight which scorches the delicate fronds
• Water when top 2-3cm of soil feels dry, allowing excess to drain completely - reduce frequency in winter months
• Maintain humidity levels of 50-60% by grouping with other plants or using a humidity tray filled with pebbles

• Scale insects can attach to leaf undersides causing yellowing - treat with horticultural oil spray weekly until cleared
• Root rot occurs from overwatering in poorly draining soil - reduce watering frequency and improve drainage immediately
