Magnolia × Soulangeana

• Native hybrid created by crossing Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora in France during the 1820s. Named after Étienne Soulange-Bodin who developed this remarkable cross.
• Produces large cup-shaped flowers up to 15cm across in pink and white tones before leaves appear. Blooms typically last 2-3 weeks in late winter to early spring.
• Develops into a spreading deciduous tree reaching 4-6 metres tall and wide at maturity. Features smooth grey bark and large oval leaves that turn yellow in autumn.
• Highly valued for its reliable flowering and adaptability to various soil types. Considered one of the most garden-worthy magnolia varieties for temperate Australian climates.

• Water weekly during growing season, reducing to monthly in winter when dormant. Check soil moisture 5cm deep before watering.
• Position in full sun to light shade with protection from hot afternoon sun in warmer regions. Morning sunlight is essential for flower development.
• Plant in well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with compost and organic matter. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
• Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring before flowering, then again in summer. Use fertilisers designed for acid-loving plants.
• Prune minimally and only if necessary, immediately after flowering finishes. Remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
• Mulch thickly around the root zone to maintain soil moisture and temperature. Keep mulch away from the trunk base.

• Plant in full sun to partial shade with at least 6 hours of morning sunlight for best flowering. Protect from strong winds that can damage delicate blooms.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings. Increase watering during hot summer months and reduce in winter.
• Maintain consistent soil moisture during spring flowering period. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
• Avoid pruning unless absolutely necessary, as magnolias heal slowly from cuts. If pruning is needed, do so immediately after flowering.
