Malus Suttyzam (Sugar Time)

• Sugar Time is a modern dwarf apple variety bred for compact growth and exceptional fruit quality. It typically reaches 2-3 metres tall, making it perfect for small gardens and container growing.
• The variety produces medium-sized apples with crisp texture and sweet flavour, ripening in late summer to early autumn. Fruit stores well and maintains quality for several months when properly stored.
• This self-fertile variety doesn't require a pollinator partner, though fruit set improves with cross-pollination from other apple varieties. It's known for reliable annual cropping and good disease resistance.
• Cold hardy and well-suited to temperate Australian climates, thriving in zones with winter chill hours between 400-800.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly during growing season, checking soil moisture 5cm down before watering. Reduce frequency in winter but maintain soil moisture.
• Position in full sun location with at least 6 hours direct sunlight daily. Protect from strong winds that can damage branches and reduce fruit set.
• Plant in well-draining, fertile soil with pH 6.0-7.0, adding compost annually. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot and collar rot issues.
• Apply complete fruit tree fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers in late summer to prevent soft growth before winter.
• Prune in late winter during dormancy, removing dead wood and maintaining open centre for air circulation. Thin fruit clusters in early summer for better fruit size.
• Mulch around base with organic matter, keeping mulch 10cm from trunk. This conserves moisture and suppresses weeds while preventing pest harbourage.

• Provide full sun exposure for at least 6 hours daily to ensure good fruit development and disease resistance. Morning sun is particularly important for drying dew from leaves.
• Water deeply once or twice weekly during growing season, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter but never let soil become completely dry.
• Plant in well-draining soil with pH 6.0-7.0, enriched with compost. Mulch around base but keep mulch away from trunk to prevent collar rot.
• Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead, diseased or crossing branches. Thin fruit when young to prevent branch breakage and improve fruit size.

• Aphids can cluster on new growth - spray with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap early morning. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds for natural control.
• Codling moth larvae tunnel into fruit - use pheromone traps during flowering and apply appropriate sprays as directed. Remove affected fruit immediately.
• Fire blight causes blackened shoots and leaves - prune affected areas 30cm below damage using sterilised tools. Avoid overhead watering and excessive nitrogen fertilising.
• Scale insects create sticky honeydew on branches - treat with white oil spray during winter dormancy. Scrub off manually if infestation is light.
