Kumquat Meiwa

• Meiwa kumquats originated in China and are considered the sweetest kumquat variety available. The round fruit can be eaten whole, skin and all.
• This compact citrus grows slowly to a manageable size, making it perfect for small gardens and large containers. The dense foliage creates an attractive evergreen feature year-round.
• Fragrant white flowers appear in spring and summer, often while fruit from the previous season is still ripening. This creates a beautiful display of flowers and fruit simultaneously.
• Gardeners love Meiwa for its ornamental value, delicious fruit, and relatively easy care compared to other citrus. It's one of the most cold-tolerant kumquat varieties available.

• Water deeply once weekly during cooler months, increasing to twice weekly in hot summer weather. Check soil moisture before watering and ensure the root zone is thoroughly soaked.
• Plant in full sun location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Protection from hot western sun in extreme climates helps prevent leaf burn.
• Use free-draining potting mix or garden soil enriched with compost and aged manure. Citrus prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
• Feed with citrus fertiliser three times annually in September, January and April across the growing season. Supplement with liquid seaweed or fish emulsion monthly during active growth.
• Prune lightly after harvest to maintain desired shape and remove dead wood. Tip pruning encourages bushier growth and more fruiting branches.
• Mulch around the root zone with organic matter but keep it away from the trunk. This conserves moisture and moderates soil temperature through Australian summers.
• Fruit ripens in winter through to early spring when other citrus may be out of season. Harvest when fruit is fully orange and slightly soft to touch.

• Position in full sun for at least 6-8 hours daily to ensure sweet fruit and healthy growth. Morning sun with afternoon protection works well in very hot inland areas.
• Water deeply once or twice weekly during summer, reducing to weekly in cooler months. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings.
• Feed with citrus-specific fertiliser in spring, summer and autumn following packet directions. A layer of compost mulch helps retain moisture and adds nutrients.
• Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or crossing branches to improve air circulation.
• Protect from strong winds and frost when young by using shade cloth or frost blankets. Established trees handle light frosts but fruit quality improves with protection.

• Citrus leaf miner creates silvery trails on new growth; prune affected leaves and apply horticultural oil during warmer months. Encourage beneficial insects to keep populations under control.
• Scale insects appear as brown bumps on stems and leaves; treat with white oil spray or wipe off manually with methylated spirits. Regular inspection helps catch infestations early.
• Root rot occurs in poorly drained soil causing yellowing leaves and wilting; ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Plant in raised beds if your soil is heavy clay.
• Bronze orange bugs can attack in summer; handpick adults and nymphs early morning when they're sluggish. Their spray can cause skin irritation so wear gloves.
