Nandina Nana

• Native to Asia, Nandina Nana is the dwarf form of the popular heavenly bamboo, reaching only 60cm in height. Despite its common name, it's not actually related to bamboo.
• The compound leaves create an elegant, fine-textured appearance that complements both modern and traditional garden styles. Each leaf can contain dozens of small leaflets.
• Gardeners love this plant for its year-round interest and low maintenance requirements once established. The autumn colour display rivals many deciduous plants.
• Small white flower clusters appear in summer, followed by bright red berries that add winter interest.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly in growing season, reducing to fortnightly in winter. Check soil moisture by inserting finger 5cm deep.
• Plant in morning sun with afternoon shade, or full sun in cooler climates. Avoid deep shade which reduces foliage colour.
• Use well-draining potting mix or garden soil amended with compost. Ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
• Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring, or liquid fertilise monthly during growing season from spring to autumn.
• Prune lightly in late winter to maintain compact shape and remove any frost-damaged growth.
• Mulch around base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature in extreme weather.
• Protect from strong winds which can damage the delicate foliage structure.

• Provide morning sun with afternoon shade in hot Australian climates, or full sun in cooler regions. Too much shade reduces the vibrant foliage colours.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter months.
• Maintain moderate humidity around the plant, especially during dry summer periods. Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
• Tolerates temperatures from -5°C to 35°C, making it suitable for most Australian climate zones.
• Prune lightly in late winter to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged growth.

• Scale insects can attach to stems and leaves, causing yellowing and weakening. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap applied weekly until resolved.
• Leaf spot diseases may occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Remove affected foliage and improve spacing between plants.
• Root rot develops from overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering frequency and ensure soil drains freely.
• Spider mites can cause stippled leaves in hot, dry conditions. Increase humidity around the plant and spray with water regularly.
