Neomarica Northiana

• Native to southeastern Brazil where it grows as an understory plant in humid Atlantic forests. First introduced to cultivation in the 1800s and named after botanist Northen.
• Forms dense clumps of arching, sword-shaped leaves reaching 60-90cm tall with a similar spread. Produces fragrant white flowers with intricate blue and yellow markings that last only one day.
• Known as the Walking Iris for its unique propagation method - plantlets form on flower stems and root where they touch the ground. This fascinating characteristic makes it a conversation starter in any garden.
• Beloved by gardeners for its low-maintenance nature and ability to naturalise in suitable climates. Creates beautiful groundcover colonies in shaded tropical gardens.

• Water 2-3 times weekly in summer, weekly in winter - keep soil consistently moist but not saturated. Use rainwater or filtered water to prevent leaf tip burn.
• Position in bright shade or morning sun with afternoon protection - 3-4 hours direct sunlight maximum. Indoor plants need bright indirect light.
• Plant in well-draining, humus-rich soil with added compost or aged manure. Potted plants need quality potting mix with extra perlite for drainage.
• Feed monthly spring through autumn with balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilising in winter when growth slows.
• Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves regularly - leave flower stems until plantlets develop if propagating. Divide overcrowded clumps every 3-4 years.
• Maintain humidity above 50% and protect from cold draughts and frost. Mulch garden plants in winter in cooler regions.

• Provide bright, filtered light or morning sun with afternoon shade - avoid harsh direct sunlight which scorches leaves. Indoor plants need bright indirect light near east-facing windows.
• Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, reducing frequency in winter months. Check top 2cm of soil before watering.
• Maintain high humidity around 50-60% using pebble trays, grouping with other plants, or regular misting. This mimics their native rainforest environment.
• Keep temperatures between 18-26°C year-round - protect from frost and cold draughts in winter. Bring potted plants indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C.

• Scale insects and mealybugs can appear on foliage - treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap spray. Check leaf undersides regularly for early detection.
• Root rot occurs in waterlogged soils - ensure excellent drainage and reduce watering in cooler months. Move potted plants to better-draining soil mix if needed.
• Brown leaf tips indicate low humidity or fluoride sensitivity - use rainwater when possible and increase humidity around the plant. Trim damaged tips with clean scissors.
• Fungal leaf spots develop in poor air circulation - space plants adequately and avoid overhead watering. Remove affected leaves promptly.
