Ophiopogon Japonicus (Mondo Grass)

• Native to Japan and Korea, belonging to the lily family despite its grass-like appearance. Forms dense, spreading clumps through underground rhizomes.
• Produces tiny white or pale purple flowers in summer, followed by distinctive bright blue berries. Evergreen foliage provides year-round interest.
• Extremely low maintenance once established, making it popular for mass plantings and difficult areas. Grows slowly but lives for many years.
• Valued by landscapers for its ability to suppress weeds and create uniform ground coverage without frequent maintenance.

• Water weekly during first growing season, then monthly or during dry spells once established. Check soil moisture 5cm down before watering.
• Plant in partial to full shade with well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Tolerates various soil types including clay and sandy soils.
• Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring, or apply liquid fertiliser monthly during growing season from spring to autumn.
• Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
• Trim back any damaged or brown leaves in late winter before new growth appears.
• Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress competing weeds, especially in summer.

• Provide partial shade to full shade for best foliage colour, though tolerates morning sun in cooler climates. Avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
• Water regularly during establishment, then reduce to occasional deep watering. Established plants are very drought tolerant.
• Maintain moderate humidity levels and protect from strong winds. Thrives in temperatures between 10-25°C.
• Apply mulch in summer to retain moisture and protect roots from heat stress.

• Overwatering causes root rot and yellowing leaves. Ensure well-draining soil and reduce watering frequency during wet periods.
• Scale insects may appear on leaf blades as small brown bumps. Treat with horticultural oil or neem oil spray.
• Crown rot occurs in poorly drained, waterlogged conditions. Improve drainage and remove affected plants immediately.
• Leaf spot diseases create brown patches during humid conditions. Increase air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
