Opuntia Ficus-Indica (Prickly Pear Cactus)

• Native to Mexico but widely cultivated across Mediterranean climates including parts of Australia for centuries. Now considered naturalised in some regions.
• Grows as large clumps of flat, oval pads that can reach 3-5 metres tall and wide at maturity. Each pad contains water storage tissue for drought survival.
• Produces bright yellow flowers in spring followed by purple-red edible fruits rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Both young pads and fruits are consumed worldwide.
• Popular for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens due to exceptional drought tolerance once established. Requires virtually no irrigation after first year.

• Water every 2-3 weeks in growing season, monthly in winter, allowing complete soil drying between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.
• Position in full sun location with morning sun exposure - at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best growth and flowering.
• Plant in sandy, well-draining soil or cactus potting mix with added perlite and coarse sand for container growing.
