Orchid Mix

• Orchids are one of the largest plant families with over 25,000 species found naturally on every continent except Antarctica. • These epiphytic plants grow on tree bark in nature, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air through their aerial roots. • Most orchids bloom once or twice yearly with flowers lasting 2-3 months, making them exceptional value flowering houseplants. • Orchid flowers display incredible diversity in colours, patterns, and fragrances, with some species mimicking insects to attract pollinators.

• Water weekly by soaking pot in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, then drain thoroughly - reduce to fortnightly in winter. • Position in bright, indirect light away from hot afternoon sun and cold drafts. • Use specialised orchid bark mix that drains freely and allows air circulation around roots. • Feed monthly with diluted orchid fertiliser during growing season, cease feeding during winter rest period. • Trim spent flower spikes above a node to encourage reblooming, and remove any dead or yellowing leaves. • Maintain humidity with pebble trays or grouping plants together, especially important in heated homes during winter.

• Provide bright, indirect light near an east or north-facing window - avoid direct sunlight which can scorch delicate leaves. • Water weekly by soaking the pot in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, then drain completely to prevent root rot. • Maintain humidity levels of 50-70% using a humidity tray or room humidifier, especially during dry Australian winters. • Keep temperatures between 18-24°C and protect from cold drafts and air conditioning vents. • Rest orchids after blooming by reducing watering and fertilising for 6-8 weeks to encourage new flower spikes.

• Scale insects can appear as small brown bumps on leaves and stems - wipe away with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and improve air circulation. • Overwatering causes yellow leaves and root rot - reduce watering frequency and ensure proper drainage through bark-based potting mix. • Aphids may cluster on new growth and flower buds - spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil solution. • Fungal spots on leaves indicate poor air circulation or water sitting on foliage - increase ventilation and water at soil level only.
