Phormium Tenax 'Bronze'

• Native to New Zealand, Phormium species have been cultivated for over 1000 years by Maori people for weaving and rope making. The Bronze cultivar was developed for its distinctive metallic foliage colouration.
• Forms dense clumps of upright, sword-shaped leaves that can reach impressive sizes while maintaining an elegant architectural form. The bronze colouration varies from deep copper to lighter amber tones depending on growing conditions.
• Extremely hardy and low-maintenance once established, making it ideal for water-wise gardens and xerophytic landscaping. Produces tall flower spikes with tubular red flowers that attract nectar-feeding birds.
• Beloved by landscape designers for its year-round structure and ability to create dramatic focal points in both contemporary and traditional garden settings.

• Water deeply once weekly in summer, monthly in winter - allow soil to dry completely between waterings for best results. Overwatering causes root rot and poor growth.
• Position in full sun for best bronze colouration, tolerates partial shade but colours may fade to green. Provide wind protection in exposed locations.
• Plant in well-draining soil with added compost - heavy clay soils must be amended with sand and organic matter. pH between 6.0-7.5 is ideal.
• Feed with slow-release fertiliser in spring only - over-fertilising causes soft growth and reduces drought tolerance. Organic compost annually is sufficient.
• Prune dead leaves at base using sharp secateurs, wear gloves as leaves are sharp-edged. Remove old flower spikes after blooming finishes.
• Mulch around base in summer to conserve moisture and suppress weeds - keep mulch away from plant crown to prevent rot.

• Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil - bronze colouration intensifies with more sunlight exposure. Morning sun with afternoon shade works well in hot climates.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between waterings - established plants are extremely drought tolerant. Reduce watering significantly in winter months.
• Provide protection from strong winds which can damage or split the sword-like leaves. Mulch around base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Remove dead or damaged leaves regularly by cutting at the base - wear gloves as leaf edges can be sharp. Divide clumps every 3-4 years to maintain vigor.

• Scale insects may appear on leaf bases - treat with horticultural oil or systemic insecticide applied in cooler weather. Remove heavily infested leaves completely.
• Crown rot can occur in poorly draining soils or with overwatering - improve drainage and reduce watering frequency immediately. Remove affected plant material and treat soil with fungicide.
• Leaf spot diseases may develop in humid conditions - ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Apply copper-based fungicide if infection persists.
• Mealybugs can hide in leaf joints - dab with rubbing alcohol or spray with insecticidal soap solution. Repeat treatment weekly until eliminated.
