Puya Chilensis

• Native to the high Andes of South America, particularly Chile and Bolivia. Grows naturally in rocky, well-drained mountain slopes.
• Forms large rosettes of silvery-green sword-like leaves that can span several metres. The architectural form creates dramatic garden focal points.
• Takes 10-20 years to mature and flower, then dies after producing seeds. The spectacular flowering event makes the wait worthwhile.
• Known as one of the largest terrestrial bromeliads in the world. Some species can reach 3-4 metres in height when flowering.

• Water deeply once weekly in summer, reducing to monthly in winter when growth slows. Check soil moisture before watering.
• Position in bright morning sun with afternoon shade protection, especially in hot inland areas. Avoid deep shade.
• Plant in sandy, well-draining soil with excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Add gravel or sand to heavy soils.
• Feed with diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during growing season (spring to autumn). Avoid high nitrogen feeds.
• Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base with clean secateurs. No regular pruning required.
• Provide shelter from strong winds and frost protection in cooler regions. Mulch around base in winter.

• Provide bright light with some afternoon shade protection in hot Australian climates. Morning sun with filtered afternoon light is ideal.
• Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter months.
• Plant in well-draining soil with good air circulation. Sandy loam mixed with gravel works well.
• Protect from frost and strong winds which can damage the large leaves.

• Scale insects can attach to leaves - treat with horticultural oil or systemic insecticide. Check regularly for small brown bumps on foliage.
• Root rot occurs from poor drainage - ensure soil drains freely and reduce watering in winter. Yellow lower leaves indicate overwatering.
• Snails and slugs may damage young growth - use organic baits or copper barriers around the plant base.
