Metrosideros Thomasiae

• Native to New Zealand, Metrosideros thomasii belongs to the same family as Australian eucalyptus and melaleuca species. Often called the northern rata, it's prized for its spectacular flowering displays.
• Features leathery, oval-shaped leaves and produces clusters of bright red bottlebrush flowers from late spring through summer. The nectar-rich blooms are magnets for honeyeaters, lorikeets, and native bees.
• Grows as a medium to large tree with an attractive rounded canopy and smooth, mottled bark. Extremely hardy once established, tolerating drought, salt spray, and strong coastal winds.
• Gardeners love this plant for its low maintenance requirements and stunning visual impact during flowering season.

• Water deeply once or twice weekly during establishment, then reduce to monthly watering in dry periods. Check soil moisture 5cm down before watering.
• Position in full sun with at least 6 hours direct sunlight daily. Tolerates partial shade but flowering may be reduced.
• Plant in well-draining soil with organic matter added. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions which cause root problems.
• Feed with native plant fertiliser in early spring and again in summer. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers which can damage native plants.
• Prune lightly after flowering in autumn to maintain shape. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches any time of year.
• Mulch 5-10cm deep around root zone, keeping mulch away from trunk. Refresh mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

• Provide full sun to partial shade for optimal flowering and growth. Morning sun with afternoon protection works well in extremely hot climates.
• Water deeply but infrequently once established, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Young plants need regular moisture for first two seasons.
• Plant in well-draining soil with good air circulation around the canopy. Tolerates sandy, loamy, and slightly alkaline conditions.
• Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove dead wood. Light pruning encourages bushier growth and more flowers.
• Apply slow-release native plant fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to retain moisture.

• Scale insects can attach to stems and leaves, causing yellowing and stunted growth. Treat with horticultural oil or systemic insecticide. Monitor regularly during warm months.
• Root rot occurs in poorly draining soils or with overwatering. Ensure excellent drainage and reduce watering frequency. Plant in raised beds if soil is clay-heavy.
• Psyllids may cause leaf curling and honeydew secretion. Remove affected foliage and apply neem oil spray. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds for natural control.
• Wind damage can break branches in exposed locations. Stake young plants and prune to develop strong structure. Choose sheltered positions for best results.
